Big Stitch Quilting

A style of big stitch quilting used as a design element to sew large running stitches using a thick thread to hold batting between two layers of fabric.

You will need a project (consider a orphan block), thin batting, backing. Thread baste these 3 layers together in a large grid pattern in both directions. Thread to give contrast that is a design element or one to match the background.


Supplies Needed:
Basted Quilt Sandwich—any thread
Quilters Hoop-(needs to fit the project) I’m using a 14” American
Heritage or No Slip Hoops
Thimble –Clover metal open-sided Thimble
and I use Elaine Consodine Goatskin
Pearl Cotton #8 (1-2 depending on how big your sample)
Scissors—Small Pair
Needle—Chenille 24 Needles
Needle Threader –optional (It has a hook on each end that slides through needle eye to grab the floss and pull through.
Makes threading SO much easier.)
Painters Tape—for help keeping stitches strait if doing a grid.

BEFORE CLASS:
You will need a project (maybe an orphan block).
Thin batting to fit block
Backing to fit block
Baste these 3 together with long running stitches in a 4’ grid in both corrections.
If you want to use the pattern like the sample your will need to trace the pattern with a Gelly Roll Brown permanent pen, Crayola color and heat set.
This is an 18” x 18” block.
